SAT Writing Section - Paragraph-Improvement Questions

The SAT writing section includes 6 paragraph-improvement questions. The paragraph-improvement questions are designed to assess the individual's ability to improve the structure of a paragraph. The paragraph-improvement questions also measures the individual's ability to organize the concepts represented within a paragraph into a logical order, and the person's ability to edit a sentence so that it fits into the context of the larger paragraph and its meaning.

The exam-taker is first presented with a paragraph or group of paragraphs. After reading through the selection, he or she must answer questions that pertain to the structure, meaning, and usage of words and concepts within the paragraph(s). The reader will be directed to identify and revise a particular sentence or group of sentences from the paragraph. A group of answer options follow and the exam taker must revise or reorganize by identifying the choice that makes the best revision.

For example, a question might present an individual with the following paragraph:

(1) It is usually a good idea to read the instructions for each section of the SAT Reasoning Test prior to taking the test. (2) Reading the instructions for each section prior to the exam allows the individual to devote all of his or her time to answering the questions correctly rather than interpreting the instructions for each section while he or she is taking the exam. (3) This is important because time is a concern so each minute that the individual spends trying to understand the instructions is a minute that he or she could be using to the answer questions.

The individual would then be presented with a question such as:

Which of the following revisions to sentence (2) would make the paragraph more effective?
  1. Delete "for each section."
  2. Delete "prior to the exam."
  3. Move "prior to the exam" to the beginning of the sentence.
  4. Add "This is because" to the beginning of the sentence.
  5. Move "Rather than interpreting" to the beginning of the sentence.

The answer for this example is (D), as the paragraph will flow more effectively if a transitioning word or phrase is added to the second sentence. (A), (B), (C), and (E) are all incorrect because each of these changes makes the meaning of the sentence less clear or weakens the structure.
